Our Story
Handcrafted hardwood hourglasses made in the USA since 1975
Since being established in 1975 by Tom and Kathi Young, T & K Young has produced a large variety of quality functional products in hardwoods. These include items for home and office, as well as architectural woodworking projects both for private and public buildings.
Custom personalized in-house laser engraved end-caps are our specialty.
Hourglass-Maker Tom Young makes the cases for his hourglasses to order in the USA today just as he has since the inception of T & K Young in 1975. Since 1990 production has been limited to hourglasses.
The selection of kiln dried domestic hardwoods used for the hourglasses includes walnut, cherry and maple that Tom hand picks at small independent sawmills in Illinois and Pennsylvania. He also has a limited supply of Koa that he purchased from a local saw mill during a visit to the Big Island of Hawaii. In addition, he also uses African Padauk and other exotic woods when available. The end-caps for each hourglass case are cut from the same piece of hardwood in order to insure the best possible color and grain match. They are not dyed or stained.
Each hardwood component, regardless of the hardwood species, is finished with clear sealers and then polished by hand to bring out the natural color and beauty of the wood.
